The importance of supporting small businesses

Posted by Jeremy Elwood on Nov 03, 2016

Small businesses are the backbone of southwest Missouri’s economic strength, and they’re the backbone of the Chamber. A large majority of our members – more than 80 percent – are considered small businesses (with 50 or fewer employees).

So we understand how important it is to support small businesses of all stripes. And November—the heart of the holiday shopping season and the month for Small Business Saturday, on November 26—is the perfect time to highlight what we can do to help our small business members.

That’s why we want to take this opportunity to thank you, our small business members, for your support in two of the best ways we know how: by sharing information that can help your organization, and by helping the community connect with your business.

Helpful information

We invite all of our small business members to attend a free presentation about the impact of The Affordable Care Act (ACA) on small businesses—those with fewer than 50 employees.

On Thursday, November 17, the University of Missouri Extension program will cover a range of ACA topics, including changes to Missouri insurance regulations, options for employers and individuals, determining eligibility for tax credits and more. Visit our website to learn more or to reserve your spot for this valuable presentation on one of the most pressing topics affecting small businesses.

Spreading the word

But there’s also how we can offer visibility for our members. Our Membership Directory allows anyone to see who is a member of the Chamber. This database includes all of our nearly 1,800 Chamber members, organized into dozens of different categories.

And that’s just the beginning; there are dozens more categories for you to search.

So remember, as you prepare for your holiday shopping this year—whether it’s on Small Business Saturday or any other time—don’t forget to shop at our local small businesses. They’re the heart of our economy, and they deserve our support.
