From Ideas to Impact: The Lasting Influence of the Community Leadership Visit

Since 1994, the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce has brought business, civic and community leaders together to learn from peer communities across the country through the Community Leadership Visit.

Each year, the program gives participants an opportunity to examine how other regions approach economic development, workforce, education, infrastructure, quality of place and complex community challenges. Just as importantly, it creates space for Springfield-area leaders to step away from their daily responsibilities, strengthen relationships and think collectively about the future of the region.

Over more than three decades, delegations have traveled from Spartanburg, South Carolina, to Spokane, Washington, and numerous communities in between. The program has also turned inward, with local visits in 2010 and 2021 encouraging participants to examine Springfield's strengths, opportunities and challenges from a different perspective.

In 2026, the Chamber brought 85 business, community and civic leaders to Indianapolis, IN to learn best practices and opportunities from that city and region.

While the destinations and topics change, the purpose remains consistent: learn from others, reflect on our own region and identify ideas that can help move the Springfield area forward.

More Than a Trip

The Community Leadership Visit is not simply an opportunity to collect good ideas. Its greatest value is often reflected in what happens after the delegation returns home.

Sometimes, participants return with a clear takeaway that quickly moves into action. Other times, a visit may introduce a new approach, strengthen relationships or spark conversations around a shared opportunity. Momentum may build over several years before the right partners, resources or circumstances align.

For that reason, the program's impact cannot be measured only by what happens in the year immediately following a visit. Some of the most meaningful outcomes develop over time as ideas are adapted to Springfield's needs and leaders continue building on the collaboration created through the shared experience.

Over the years, the Community Leadership Visit has directly inspired some local initiatives, accelerated others and helped build broader support for long-term community priorities. Its influence can be seen in physical projects, public-private partnerships, regional organizations, civic programs and new approaches to community problem-solving. Putting Ideas into Action

Although every destination offers something different, several themes have remained consistent throughout the history of the Community Leadership Visit: the importance of collaboration, investment in people, strong urban cores, regional thinking and a shared community identity.

These lessons were reinforced during the Chamber's most recent visit. Indianapolis offered a compelling example of how communities can build momentum over time by aligning economic development, infrastructure, workforce, housing and quality-of-place investments around a broader vision.

Following the trip, participants came together to identify common themes and potential opportunities for Springfield. The resulting discussions included both near-term ideas and longer-term aspirations, such as:

  • Talent and innovation: Exploring stronger internship and community engagement opportunities for students, while better connecting Springfield's education, innovation and employer resources.
  • Downtown and quality of place: Improving coordination around downtown cleanliness, safety and activation while developing a more connected vision for public spaces and major destinations.
  • Housing and infrastructure: Evaluating regional housing targets, development processes and opportunities to better align infrastructure investments with growth.
  • Regional identity and communication: Strengthening how Springfield communicates its competitive advantages, explains major community priorities and engages residents in long-term decisions.
  • Collaboration and investment: Aligning regional partners around shared goals and exploring sustainable public-private-philanthropic funding approaches.
  • Sports and destination development: Assessing opportunities to leverage existing assets and pursue strategic investments that attract visitors and support broader economic development.

These are not all new ideas, nor are they all ready for immediate implementation. Many build on work already underway in the Springfield region. Their significance lies in the opportunity to connect existing efforts, identify gaps, bring new partners into conversations and build momentum around priorities that may otherwise take years to advance.

Looking Ahead

Ultimately, the Community Leadership Visit is about more than the destination. It is about the leaders who participate, the relationships they build and the ideas they bring home.

Its impact is measured not only by what participants learn during several days in another community, but by the conversations they continue, the partnerships they strengthen and the opportunities they help turn into lasting progress for the Springfield region.

The Chamber remains committed to working alongside business, civic and community partners to build on these takeaways, helping lead efforts where appropriate, supporting work already underway and identifying opportunities to turn shared priorities into meaningful progress for the Springfield region.
