Russell Cellular: Breaking ground on a new corporate headquarters

When a company is evaluating a location for a new corporate headquarters, that project often represents significant capital investment and job creation.

This summer, the Chamber’s economic development arm—the Springfield Business Development Corporation—helped announce just such a project: a new $8 million home office for Russell Cellular in the Springfield region.

On October 26, the wireless communication services company broke ground on its 40,000-square-foot headquarters facility in Battlefield. Chamber economic development staff have worked with company leaders throughout the process, helping with real estate options, statewide incentives, and community resources.

With Russell Cellular’s growing national footprint spanning across 30 states, the company could have relocated anywhere. Owner and CEO Jeff Russell, as well as many of his employees, have made Battlefield their home; the quality of place offered by that community and the larger Springfield region was a driving factor in the company’s decision to reinvest here.

“Nationally, the majority of all new jobs are created by existing businesses in a community, and Russell Cellular’s expansion is a great example of that,” said Ryan Mooney, the Chamber’s senior vice president of economic development. “We applaud their decision to create these kinds of high-wage jobs right here in our region, and we’ll continue to focus our efforts on creating a vibrant community that encourages the creation of additional projects like this in our region.”

In addition to consolidating the company’s existing local workforce into one facility, the new headquarters project will also create 135 new high-wage jobs over the next five years.
