Purpose of Position

  • The purpose of this position is to aid in the supervision of youth transitioning through the Greene County Youth Academy and assist in program delivery, especially as it relates to family and community services, under the supervision of the Director of Community Based Services.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Supervise youth one-on-one and in a group setting.
  • Submit for approval a community supervision schedule for all youth to staff contact that includes, but not limited to: Home visits, school visits/contact, and individual contact.
  • Facilitate group activities and lessons and otherwise engage program youth as necessary.
  • Provide community supervision of youth to include, but not limited to: home visits, school visits/contacts, and individual contacts in the community.
  • Orientate youth and families into the program.
  • Release youth and families out of the program and facilitate continuum of care for youth and families in the community.
  • Receive and respond to referrals into the program.
  • Maintain reports and records. Prepare reports for court and be available to testify if necessary.
  • Enforce the rules and expectations of the program.
  • Transport youth as necessary.
  • Facilitate family intervention and mediate conflict.
  • Conduct drug testing for individual youth as needed. Review lab test results and take appropriate action.
  • Submit for approval a randomized weekly schedule for drug testing all youth who are in need of drug testing. Review lab test results and ensure notification of treatment team.
  • Facilitate exit strategies for youth that utilize resources identified by the treatment team.
  • Be a liaison between GCYA and the probation and delinquency units. Attend relevant meetings, including DAC, and court hearings regarding youth being referred to or participating in the GCYA program.
  • Engage in training and learning opportunities. Extend self in offering best practice program implementation and in professional growth.
  • Be available to juveniles and their families via cell phone.
  • Attend treatment team staffings.
  • Maintains highest degree of health, cleanliness, and sanitary conditions in assigned areas.
  • Performs daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks and responsibilities in assigned area.


Additional Tasks and Responsibilities

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

  • Develops a mentor relationship with youth to ensure individualized quality treatment.
  • Actively observes and assesses the behavioral, emotional, and psychological condition of youth participants and keeps other staff informed daily of significant conditions known about individual youth and/or the group.
  • Responsible for providing client supervision, implementing group and individual treatment plans and developing constructive relationships with clients, parents/guardians, co-workers, and other treatment team members.
  • Organizes and meets deadlines, consistent in processing paperwork and able to standardize information.
  • Supervises, evaluates, conducts and assists in youth participant activities as need.
  • Exercises considerable judgment and discretion in the performance of duties consistent with established standards and regulations.
  • Orientates youth and their families into and out of the program in such a way as to engage the participants, encourage compliance, and increase the likelihood of success.
  • Provides continuum of care planning; preparation, and follow up.
  • Assess youth and their families in a timely fashion in order to provide necessary information regarding admission decisions and planning.
  • Act as a resource person to pull from a directory of community partners and programs for the purpose of meeting individualized family needs.
  • Conducts self as an Officer of the Court, attends Court Hearings for program youth and youth who may be assigned to the program.
  • Organizes, coordinates, and schedules the home and community visits and UAs in order to meet program requirements.
  • Acts as a liaison between the Greene County Youth Academy and other juvenile office units by attending meetings; Dispositional alternatives for Court (DAC), court hearings involving a youth who is either a participants or who may be referred, and other meetings as may be assigned.
  • Develop supportive work relationship with other Family and Community Specialists and provide assistance and instruction to newly hired Family and Community Specialists.
  • The duties and responsibilities of the Family and Community Specialist may be changed, expanded, reduced, or deleted to meet the business needs of Greene County Family/Juvenile Court.


Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions           

  • Bachelor degree or higher in criminal justice, education, psychology, social work, or closely related social sciences required and related experience dealing with juveniles. Must possess a valid Missouri Driver’s license is required and an acceptable driving record. Must successfully complete a background investigation. Any person functioning in this position is required to pass an initial and continued random urinalysis test for the use of controlled substances. This is professional work in a treatment program for juvenile offenders.
