Workforce isn't just a buzz word--it's the No. 1 concern we hear businesses tell us is keeping them from growing. The problem stems from the fact that growing economies like ours are literally going to run out of people to hire. As the baby boomer generation leaves the workforce, there aren't going to be enough people to fill their positions because the working population is shrinking ... unless we take action. As unemployment remains low, individuals with highly specialized skills will be in high demand. That's why we are bringing together stakeholders from business and the education community to address this issue. Here are some of the top resources and programs the Chamber offers as part of this strategic area of focus to help address this important issue.
Why Springfield? It's the question every human resources department has to answer when hiring outside the community--and before the Chamber and SBDC launched the Talent Attraction Initiative there really wasn't one place to find the answer. The Talent Attraction website is that place. The initiative is made possible by funding from Springfield Business Development Corporation investors. By supporting the Chamber and SBDC, businesses are helping the Springfield community attract and retain the quality workforce we need to grow our economy.
More than just a networking group, this committee of the Chamber is focused on engaging and retaining Springfield's Young Professionals ages 21-40. Since its creation in 2007 The Network has become the go-to voice for young leaders and professionals in the Springfield community.
The P-20 Council of the Ozarks works to ensure that our education system from Pre-school to Grade 20 aligns with the needs of our region's employers. Comprised of two committees, an advisory committee and a steering committee, the council brings together leaders from the business and education community to collaborate and vet program ideas which can then be taken and possibly implemented by the partner organizations.
This partnership between the Chamber, Springfield Public Schools and 10 other area school districts aims to focus public education resources on confronting the number one challenge facing businesses and employers today: talent development and retention. GO CAPS is designed to immerse high school students (junior and senior) in professional environments through engaging curriculum that is driven by passionate industry leaders and delivered by visionary instructors. It focuses on exposing students to careers that exist in our community and allowing students to “test-drive” their future by learning from local professionals about the jobs that exist today and will likely exist in the future.
