Citizens Police Academy

CPA Now open to business owners not residing within City limits

Published Wednesday, July 12, 2017

In years past, The Springfield Police Department has only had this open to current citizens residing within the city limits.  Recently, we have been looking to attract more than just citizens, but some of our local business owners.  The class lasts for a total of 11 weeks, with just a few hours on one night each week.  Items covered during the class include some of our current policy and procedures, how officers react and treat each crime scene, recent changes in law and the overall running of the department.  Aside from the classroom stuff, there is also a range day included where the participants get the chance to fire the same weapons as the officers.  Also included are tours of the 911 Communication Center and the Calaboose, built in 1891 and is the oldest exhisting structure owned by the City of Springfield.

Previous alumni from the class are responsible for The Springfield Police Foundation.  This foundation was started as a result of citizens attending the academy and felt the need to support the community by supporting the extra needs of the Department.
