Qualifications & Experience:                                                                                    

MANDATORY: (M1) Bachelor’s degree in student services, counseling, education, social work, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning; (M2) One year of experience in academic advising, career advising, veterans’ postsecondary education benefits, adult education, or student services; (M3) Experience working in higher education; (M4) Experience working with veterans and knowledge of available veteran support services; (M5) Experience and sensitivity serving disadvantaged groups including veterans, low-income, first-generation, or academically disadvantaged students; (M6) Ability to work well with others; (M7) Strong oral and written communication skills; (M8) Ability to use information technology for professional productivity (such as Microsoft Office Suite).

DESIRABLE:   (D1) Knowledge of TRIO programs and services; (D2) Prior military or military-related experience; (D3) Experience working within a collegiate setting; (D4) Experience with Colleague.

Position Summary

The Advising Coordinator is responsible to the Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) Program Director for the academic, career and financial aid advising of all VUB participants and prospective candidates.

Essential Job Duties

  • Responsible for academic advising services to VUB participants, including the development of Individualized Academic Plans.
  • Provide career exploration activities to help prospective and current participants identify optimal academic and career paths.
  • Provide guidance on federal student financial aid programs and Veterans’ benefits.
  • Responsible for data collection and assessing student progress towards completion of academic goals.
  • Collaborate with OTC’s Advising, Career Services, Financial Aid, and Veteran Services offices, as well as other appropriate college departments to support the advising of VUB participants.
  • Collaborate with and refer participants to community partners for services.
  • Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
  • Comply with college policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including attending college functions, serving on committees and attending community events.
